The Maids by Jean Genet arrives at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater on June 12-13, 2026, as a landmark international production by Georgia's Royal District Theatre, presented by Emolas Corporation. 

Originally staged in Tbilisi and directed by Nika Tavadze, "The Maids" has been recognized as Best Performance of the Year, with its three leading actresses - Nata Murvanidze, Nina Kasradze, and Baia Dvalishvili - each awarded the Best Actress title. Their performances define the production's intensity, delivering a precise and disciplined ensemble marked by psychological depth and emotional control. The staging, supported by minimalist scenography and an original score, reinforces a focused, uncompromising interpretation of Genet's text. 

The production is presented by the Royal District Theatre, a Tbilisi-based institution founded in 1997 and widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary theatre platforms in the region. Known for its experimental approach and reinterpretation of classical works, the theatre has built a strong international presence through collaborations and performances at major European venues and festivals, including Deutsches Theater Berlin and FAST FORWARD Festival, earning critical recognition and multiple awards. 

Hosting the production in New York, the Gerald W. Lynch Theater has served since 1988 as an established cultural venue within the city's performing arts landscape. As part of CUNY Stages, it has hosted productions and events from institutions such as Lincoln Center, the New Yorker Festival, and the World Science Festival, as well as major broadcasts and public programs. Its history of presenting high-level international work positions it as a fitting stage for this production's U.S. presentation.
